Classic Black Bean Recipe

This weekend I decided to experiment.  After playing with several variations, I came up with the perfect combination of sweetness and dark chocolate bitterness without any bean flavor.  I even gave it to my son and he had no idea!

Preparation Time:  15 minutes + Bake: About 15 min = Total time 30 min

Makes about 9 brownies

From your Pantry:

  • 1 can Classic Black Beans drained and rinsed
  • ½ cup oats
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • 2 Tbs cocoa powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 2 Tbs sugar
  • ¼ cup coconut oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • ½ bar of dark chocolate, broken into pieces


  1. Preheat oven to 350F. Grease 8x8 pan
  2. Combine all ingredients in food processor (except chocolate bar)
  3. Mix until well blended – this can take about 10 min
  4. If you need to save time, use oat flour (see tips to make your own)
  5. Fold in dark chocolate chunks and sprinkle a few pieces on the on the top
  6. Bake in for 14-16 minutes
  7. Cool and serve slightly warm 


Food Science Tip:  Grind oats in coffee grinder to save time on blending and give you a smoother finished texture.
